PICA launches a new service

PICA Recon+ (INGU inside)

The PICA Recon+TM (powered by INGU) provides acoustic leak detection as well as the following value-added data:

  • Magnetometer
  • Accelerometer
  • Gyroscope
  • Pressure
  • Temperature

The PICA Recon+TM spheres, (usually three), are introduced into the pipeline via a check valve, ARV or hot tap.  They follow the flow in the pipeline to an extraction point, which may be a removable spool (with internal basket), or a downstream hydrant, or ARV.  The spheres can also be flowed into an open chamber, or lagoon where a catch net is positioned to trap them.

The idea of launching three spheres is to provide redundant data.  Unwanted noises, such as the tool hitting against the pipe wall, are unlikely to repeat at the same location three times, so they can be ruled out.

The added value data (e.g. Magnetometer) can be helpful to detect gross changes in wall thickness in metal pipes (<8"), and the pressure sensor, combined with the Gyroscope and accelerometer data, can help to measure the elevation of the pipe.

PICA has two models for deploying the Recon+ Tools:

  • Launch and trap yourself (reserved for experienced users who are confident in their procedures and infrastructure)
  • PICA launches and traps the spheres for you

The Recon+TM Tools are aptly named because they are a capable screening tool.  The more the Tools are run, the better the reliability of the data and its interpretation.  In the oil and gas business, some customers run these Tools weekly (Yes, they are that affordable!).

For more information, or to book a Recon+TM run, please call 1-800-661-0127 or email

PICA now has offices across the U.S.A. and Canada to serve you.
