The City of Calgary saved money in the late 1990’s as an early adopter of PICA’s forerunner technology, the Hydroscope. Roy Brander, Senior Infrastructure Engineer, reported that “the city’s main replacement/rehabilitation selections (went) from an 80% efficiency rate to over 90%, better than halving the error rate. For corrosion-related replacement decisions, the main selection accuracy is now, effectively, 100%.” When Russell NDE Systems resumed inspections using PICA’s HydraSnakeTM (their advanced DCA inspection technology), the City of Calgary was the first to come back on board . They contracted with PICA Corp (a Russell subsidiary) to perform direct condition assessments of their cast and ductile water and wastewater pipelines. Armed with PICA’s “good information” regarding the actual condition of their lines, the City of Calgary can resume increasing the cost-effectiveness of their rehabilitation/replacement program. |

PICA, a subsidiary of Russell NDE Systems Inc., utilizes 35 years of leading RFT technology and tool development to provide accurate profiling of the remaining wall thickness in metallic piping. Our patented technology and data analysis software for Direct Condition Assessment is uniquely able to “see” through liners, tubercles and other scale to quantify corrosion pitting, erosion and cracks as well as graphitization. A wide range of tool sizes are being used in water based liquid pipelines in municipal and industrial sectors on five continents. |

This is the inaugural issue of the PICA newsletter. Each issue will discuss newsworthy items in the water infrastructure industry as well as current PICA projects or technology advancements for pipeline condition assessment. How did we choose the “Good Information” e-News name? Our business mission is Good Information = Good Decisions. PICA delivery of Good Information (from Direct Condition Assessment (DCA) of pipelines) allows clients to make Good Decisions on infrastructure asset management. |
